Explaining good and bad Bidah

Bid'ah Al Hasana and Bid'ah Al-Sayyi'ah

Imam Shafi's and Ahmad also narrated this hadith to explain it.
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also said: "Whoever introduces a good practice into Islam will have the reward for it and the reward of those who follow him in it, without being diminshed from their reward" (Sahih Muslim).

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "The best of deeds are (which are innovated) as long as they are good." (Sahih al-Jami') and i found this Hadith in Jami and i also saw it in the book of Imam Al Hajjawi (RA).

And the concept of praying the tarawweh in the Mosque was also a bidah because the Prophet (ﷺ) did not do that for more than 3 days and Hadrat Umar and Hadrat Ali (RA) started it and it was a bidah ? no ? it was a Bidah aswell.

And this Tarawweh one is also recorded in Muwatta Malik when hadrat Umar (RA) told his son to pray 20 "rak'ahs" of taraweeh and Hadrat Ali (RA) was also standing close to him and he allowed it instead of stopping it so this also a bidah by the logic of a certain sect.

And the day on which the Sahabas used to hold khutbahs and used to pray more was that no Bidah ? because the Prophet (ﷺ) never held a day like that. And Imam Ahmad (RA) said that its not bidah because the Sahaba knows more than us and what they do is right.

And a scholar of the Salafism sect quoted the opinion of Imam Ahmad (RA) and said that it was bid'ah and he called the Imam wrong by doing that and considered his opinion correct over the opinion of the Great Imam.

And another example that when you guys go to the school you are also doing bidah aswell And in some way you can't save yourself from Bid'ah no matter what.

And the concept of Bid'ah al-Hasanah and Al-Sayyi'ah should be very clear now.

And these Shaykhs and the Great Imams had much more knowledge than us in everything and had more hadiths available than us and if they say that there are two types of Bidah then i consider there are 2 types of it on the basis of Hadiths and Fatwas. These Great Imams and Shaykhs have also explained this concept really well.

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: "Bid'ah is of two types: Bid'ah al-Hasanah (good innovation) and Bid'ah al-Sayyi'ah (bad innovation). Good innovation is that which is in accordance with the Sunnah. While bad innovation is that which contradicts the Sunnah. Al Shafi also had the same view on this." (Al-Mughni)

Shaykh Al Islam Caliph of Sultan Al Awliya Ibn Qudamah (RA) : "Bid'ah is not rejected in its entirety. Rather, it is divided into good and bad. Good innovation is that which is in accordance with the principles of Islam, while bad innovation is that which contradicts those principles." (Al Mughni)

Imam Al-Buhut (RA) : "Bid'ah is an innovation in religion. If it is in accordance with the Sunnah, then it is good. If it contradicts the Sunnah, then it is bad." (Kashshaf al-Qina')

And the Fatwa of Imam-e-Azam. Imam Abu Hanifah: "Bid'ah is of two types: Bid'ah al-I'tiqadiyah (innovation in belief) and Bid'ah al-'Amaliyah (innovation in practice). Bid'ah al-I'tiqadiyah is always bad, while Bid'ah al-'Amaliyah can be good or good."

Innovations that are in accordance with the principles of Islam and serve a beneficial purpose can be considered Bid'ah al-Hasanah (good innovation).

Innovations that contradict the Quran, Sunnah, or the teachings of the Companions are considered Bid'ah al-Sayyi'ah (bad innovation) and should be avoided.

But this doesn't mean that someone can go and add a new thing in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,: "Bid'ah leads to hellfire".

This hadith above about the Bad Bidah and Al Hajjawi explained it really well in two of his books when he addressed the issue of bid'ah.

Meanwhile Ibn Taymiyyah in Sirat Mustaqim
"Mawlid is a bidah but whoever celebrates it will get a great amount of Good deeds."

Ibn Taymiyyah in Majmu Fatawi vol 20 said
"Bidah which is not against the text of the Prophet (SAW) is a good bidah."

Umar (RA) said blessing of bidah
Greatest Scholars of Islam on Bid'ah Hasanah

The Great Imam Tahawi said bid'ah is divided into five parts

Imam Nawawi said good bid'ah exists in his Tabyan in Adab of Quran.

Ibn Taymiyyah said bid'ah can be good for the Saying of Umar (RA)

Mulla Ali Qari also explained the concept of Bid'ah hasanah in his sharh of Mishkat al masabih by Mulla Ali Qari (rh) hadith number 1385 vol 3 pg,330.
