The virtues of winter
:
Rasul Allah (S) said: "Fasting in winter is the cool gain (means an easy reward)".
(Tirmidhi 787 and in Musnad Ahmad)
Qatadah narrated to us, Anas narrated to us, he said: Abu Huraira (RA) said: Shall I not guide you to the cool gain? We said: And what is that, O Abu Huraira? He said: Fasting in winter.
(Sunan Al Kubara by Imam Bayhaqi Hadith no 8531)
from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri who said: The Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: "Winter is the spring of the believer; its day is short, so he fasts, and its night is long, so he stands [in prayer]."
(Sunan Al Kubara by Imam Bayhaqi Hadith no 8532)
Al-Hasan Al Basri (rh) said: The believer's best season is winter: its night is long for standing in prayer, and its day is short for fasting.
Qatada (rh) said: The angels rejoice in winter for the believer, as the day is short, so he fasts, and the night is long, so he stands in prayer.
And when Ubayd ibn Umair al-Laythi (ra) came in winter, he would say:"O people of the Quran, the night has become long for your prayers, and the day has become short for your fasting.".
O my brother: Winter is the believer's spring.
Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali (rh) said: "Because he grazes in the gardens of obedience, roams in the fields of worship, and lets his heart wander in the meadows of facilitated deeds, just as animals graze in the spring pasture, fattening and strengthening their bodies. Similarly, the religion of a believer is strengthened in winter by the ease of performing acts of obedience that God has facilitated. A believer can fast during the winter days without hardship or difficulty from hunger or thirst, as the days are short and cold, so he does not feel the hardship of fasting.".
Al-Manawi (rh) said: "Fasting in winter is the cold bounty," meaning the bounty obtained without hardship.
Completing ablution thoroughly in severe cold is among the highest qualities of faith.
Ibn Sa'd narrated with his chain of transmission that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, advised his son Abdullah at the time of his death, saying to him: "O my son! Adhere to the qualities of faith." He said: "And what are they?" He said: "Fasting in the intense heat of summer days, killing the enemies with the sword, patience in the face of calamity, perfecting ablution on a cold day, hastening to prayer on a cloudy day, and avoiding the dregs of madness." He said: "And what are the dregs of madness?" He said: "Drinking wine." (2)
Al-Awza'i narrated from Yahya bin Abi Kathir; he said: Six qualities, whoever possesses them has perfected faith: fighting the enemies of Allah with the sword, fasting in the summer, performing ablution thoroughly on a cold day, hastening to prayer on a cloudy day, avoiding argument and dispute while knowing you are truthful, and patience in the face of calamity.
